How to Acquire Your First Client
Customer Acquisition and Engagement
In this post I’ll dive into the easiest way to get yourself out there and drum up some business, even if you’re just starting out.
Cold feet about promoting your new endeavor? Go back to this blog post for a life-changing definition of Marketing.
Once you have some courage to start promoting your business, what do you do?
A low pressure way to let people know you've got a side gig or are starting your own business is to stay share your decision with your personal contacts. A simple, “Guess what? I’ve started….” is good enough to start. Think of it as you’re just sharing what you’re up to with friends and family, and ask for their moral support. As you advance, share your story. This does a few great things for you and your business:
It helps get you over the fear of “going public” about your new business;
It helps you get practice explaining what you do and why; and
If someone identifies with the need for your product or service, you might have a Lead or Referral.
With the high demand on our time these days, the easiest way to share your exciting news is through an email newsletter (AKA e-newsletter).
What’s the difference between an e-newsletter and a regular email?
Privacy is KEY. Your contacts is one of the most important assets you and your business have. Protect them.
An e-newsletter, sent from a platform to do this specifically, protects the privacy of the recipients and allows you to personalize each email with their name or other data so it doesn’t sound like a mass email. It should feel like you’re talking to them over coffee, or maybe more formal depending on your audience, but nevertheless relate-able and down to earth.
Over the years we tried multiple vendors for this service, and found Mailchimp is by far the most intuitive and easiest to use, equipped with templates that look like we’re in 2020 not 2002, and awesome ways to promote social platforms, add graphics, etc.
